Standardized Exams - Tip 4

This post is for most if not all standardized exams.

The number one issue I see with the majority of students who are preparing for these major and critical exams is that they do not spend enough time prepping.

For example, obtaining a tutor a week or even three weeks before the test date is probably not going to do much to increase your scores, especially if you are meeting up with a tutor for only an hour or two per session, given your current score (pre-test).

Here's my take. If you know that you will take one of these major exams (All High School AP exams included), please start months...

I love showing children the respect they deserve. This makes all the difference in the world.

I pride myself in having the patience to explain things in more ways than one, so that children don't get frustrated. Being very personable and kind helps children feel secure in learning new ways to understand what is difficult for them. I also show children strategies which can be used for future work which is similar, that way they are not just learning the problem or skill specific to the moment, but can remember what they learned and how, so they can apply the knowledge later and forever. I love sharing what I learned at the University of Georgia School of Education. The teaching skills...

Strategic Business Planning

You can save yourself and your business thousands of dollars by implementing various planning tools to allow your business to be successful. Why plan?

What builder sets out to build a house without a plan or just stops and thinks awhile! Supposedly you were to take an extended journey without a road map, unless the route is well known, it is likely that you would loose a lot of time or get lost. The old Adage is true, "If you don't know where you are going, any road will lead you there".

Planning is not something you do TODAY for TODAY's benefit ...
... rather it is something you do NOW...

Most Important: Customizing the tutoring and approach to the student's learning style, needs, learning objectives, questions.

Recently, after I tutored two of my favorite students to prepare them for upcoming tests in Pre-Algebra and Geometry respectively, and I received positive reinforcement for the importance and value of customizing the tutoring approach, information, knowledge transfer, and tutoring style.

After the first tutoring session, I was approached by three people as I was waiting for my next student:
1. An elementary school teacher – she complemented me on my knowledge and tutoring style, and asked me for my information to refer students to me for tutoring.
2. A parent seeking a tutor for their daughter...

Success vs. Stress, including Fear of Failure and Memory Problems

A few keys to success in school (for people with or without A.D.D.):

We need to concentrate on taking notes in classes, and possibly use a digital recorder to record some classes. (That makes a tremendous difference for many of my A.D.D. students, because they can "go back and listen" to things they missed when distractions occurred.) Examples of distractions include when other students are moving or making noises, worries or concerns**, being hungry, needing to go to the restroom, looking for a pen or pencil, or needing to sharpen a pencil, etc. There are many sources of distractions. Even...

Taking the SAT

When prepping my students for the SAT, I use Up Your Score: The Underground Guide to the SAT. It's written by 5 college kids, all of whom aced the SAT. They're absolutely hilarious! In re-reading their book, I learned the following helpful techniques. These techniques helped me get my 2200 when I was in high school, and they've helped my students get the scores they want.

1. Always guess. The Educational Testing Service (or Evil Testing Serpent) makes guessing SEEM like a bad idea because you get -1/4 point if you get a question wrong. BUT: If you were to guess randomly, you would get...
